When did our obsession with being healthy become unhealthy?
Any diet, you name it I've probably
tried it. Low carb, low fat, high fat, I've even been vegan.
But, they weren't sustainable.
If you’re wondering why all you've been eating is Kälteen bars and you think they suck, it's because everybody
is different which took me a long time and some
weird meals to discover. What
works for someone else might not work for you. Alas, it is frustrating watching your friend eat
four toffee crisps for breakfast, yet you can't breathe near chocolate.

People react
differently due to change in blood sugar levels from what we eat. Some people
may eat bread resulting in blood sugars rising, however doesn’t affect other
people - this can be said for other foods too. This, along with metabolism and
hormones determines how the body breaks down proteins, fats and carbs and uses
or stores them (some information on this here, here and here).
Morale of the story, there are no
rules to diets, despite what we see in the media.
What is healthy for one person, may not be for the other. If you are trying
something and it isn’t working, try varying the amount of protein, carbs and
fat to see what works best for you. Think about eating intuitively and what
makes you feel good after. Carbs make me fuller for longer and
too much fatty food makes me feel sluggish.
I have regrettably spent
some of my life avoiding sandwiches thinking it would make me two stone
heavier, only now to realise I couldn't have been more wrong.
Diets work in the short run, however in your long
term quest for health don't neglect your mental health and relationship with food. Counting calories,
weighing your food, cutting out food groups is unhealthy
yet something we are told it's actually okay.
Healthy isn't eating avocado on toast on toast every morning just because someone on Instagram does. Healthy isn’t counting calories. Healthy is just as much a mentality as it is a diet, do what works for you.
