How to not give a f*ck
This post is for the women out there who
face ‘Gym-timidation’ (yeah I can’t believe
there is a word for it either), those who feel uncomfortable walking through a
room filled with protein-bros. Who feel stares on their back as they fumble
about pretending to know what they are doing thinking "I should have just stayed at home". It’s normal to feel this and is
something which will resonate with everyone who has set foot in a gym.
Here are my tips for beating ‘Gym-timidation’:
Invest in wireless earphones
Not only do earphones deter from weird
old men asking how you are every five minutes they also ease anxiety and allow
for maximum concentration plus you don’t even need to take them off.
Plan ahead
Write out your workout on your phone
so you can go there and get on with it. That way you aren't standing alone scrolling
through twitter next to the leg press, that is awkward. Trust me.
I base most of my workouts off
Instagram and YouTube bloggers videos, finding alternatives for certain exercises to what I feel comfortable doing at a weight suited to me. If you are just beginning though keep things simple. YouTube is a great way to find out how exercises are
performed properly and how equipment is used.
Go to classes
Classes are a good way to get
to know the basics and other exercises to try while seeing what you like/don't like without the pressure
of the gym. Classes teach you about technique and form so is a perfect place to
improve and learn which will build confidence when you go to try them out elsewhere (shout out to Ryan at CrossFit Glasgow).
Realise nobody notices you
I wish someone had told me this.
It’s hard to get your head around the
fact nobody is watching you or cares about you, but they don’t. Everyone is
doing what they want to do, so there is nothing stopping you from doing what you
want to do. If you spend less time worrying about whether
you fit in or not you’ll find you do fit in, because you deserve to be
there just as much as anyone else.
Its 2017 girl, just do your thing.
Thanks for reading xxx
Just do your thing 😘 but don’t wear smurf hats and baggy joggers - leave that to the boys who can’t lift as much as you xx
